Inlays and onlays are used when a cavity is large but the surrounding tooth is healthy. Inlays and onlays are suitable when tooth damage is not extensive, and only the damaged portion of your tooth needs to be removed, eliminating the need for a crown. Made from porcelain, gold or resin, an inlay sits in a hole in the tooth and an onlay sits on the tooth to build up its shape. Custom designed to fit your tooth precisely, inlays and onlays fill most types of cavities and are almost impossible to distinguish from the natural tooth. The colour of porcelain inlays/onlays does not change over time.
