Crowns

Sometimes damage to a tooth, such as a large break, crack or filling, gets to the point where there is no longer sufficient structure to the tooth to hold a filling. A crown might be required to protect a tooth from fractures that could cause permanent loss of the tooth. Since teeth support the facial muscles, anything less than a full tooth may affect your appearance. A crown is used to provide restoration that strengthens and restores the tooth to its normal shape and size, keeping your jaw and bite in alignment. A crown can also be part of the attachment of a fixed bridge for the replacement of teeth. Typically crowns are made entirely from porcelain or porcelain fused to white gold so they are extremely durable and the repair virtually invisible.

This also requires two or more appointments at your dentist. At the first appointment we will shape the tooth, take an impression and place a temporary crown. The impression gives us an accurate working model of your mouth and allows a dental laboratory to fabricate a crown that will fit your tooth precisely. During the last appointment we remove the temporary crown and replace it with the new permanent crown. The crown is permanently cemented into place.
